So. It’s been a while. My kids are bigger. Some things have changed.
Back around January 2017, I posted this:
“There is one thing I’d like to do this year. I won’t call it a resolution; its more of a goal. And goals I can definitely get behind. I’d really like to get paid for one or more of my creative hobbies. Be that photography, visual design, or illustration; I’d like to start freelancing on the side. It’s not really a matter of how much money I make, its more about validation and actualization for me. These are things that I have been passionate about my entire life, and it’s time for them to become a more active presence in my life.”
And I would like to give a little update. In October of 2017, I left my full time gig for a variety of reasons that I may or may not get into in a subsequent post. I’d rather let it lie, but part of me feels like I should share my experience in the event that it will help out someone in a comparable situation.
At any rate, it was a catalyst for me to really put myself out there with my photography and its led to some cool stuff. I’ve been doing a reasonably steady freelance business as a family photographer since then. It was pretty slow over the winter holidays, as I’m pretty sure it is for a lot of photographers. Overall, I am really proud of how far I have come since I last updated this blog. I have a long way to go to get where I want to be, but making visual art professionally seems like an attainable goal for the first time in my life.
I’ve made less progress, but still some progress, on the Illustration business. I think, for whatever reasons, this goal is a little amorphous, and its still a little ambiguous as to how I will achieve it. But it’s becoming a little more clear bit by bit. I’ll say more about that in a later post, too.
So, in short. Resolution accomplished? Not sure I’ve ever been able to say that before!
